a thin oil made from petroleum, a mixture of hydrocarbons; coal oil. It is used in lamps and stoves, to run tractors and farm machines, as fuel for jet planes, and as a base for insect sprays. »

Kerosene is a mixture of hydrocarbons with higher molecular weights. It is therefore more viscous, less volatile, and has a higher flash point than gasoline (Monroe M. Offner).
